Work of Breathing (WOB)

Work of breathing (WOB) quantifies the energy expenditure required for breathing. Elevated WOB may lead to respiratory fatigue and failure, particularly in neonates.

Calculator

Estimation Method

Elastic WOB/breath = Vt² / (2 × C) × 0.0981

Units: Joules per breath (Vt in L, C in L/cmH2O, converting cmH2O·L to Joules)
